The former Arsenal player, now at Leverkusen, unleashed all his firepower against the coach and the players after Switzerland’s draw against Kosovo.
Switzerland is in shock due to the strong criticisms from the captain of the national team, Granit Xhaka, who, after the disappointing draw against Kosovo (2-2) in a Euro qualification match, unleashed a barrage of criticism against the coach, Murat Yakin, and the players, accusing them of a lack of intensity.
“We didn’t train as we should have. There was no rhythm or intensity. It felt like we were playing a friendly match in the park. That’s not how it works. I need to calm down first and not choose words that are too strong because it would be counterproductive,” said the former Arsenal player, now at Leverkusen, in a surprising outburst. The first to be surprised was the coach, Murat Yakin. “I will discuss with Granit privately to understand what is behind his statements,” he said minutes after the string of criticisms from the controversial former Arsenal player.
The coach also received criticism, as Xhaka challenged his position on the field, stating, “Coaches who know me and understand my game know that my position on the field is deeper.” According to Murat Yakin, it’s all a matter of the press. “They want to create a division between us.” Xhaka’s statements have divided public opinion in Switzerland.
