Sonia Bermudez, former player of the Women’s National Team and coach of the U-19 team, with whom she won the European Championship last summer, has released a statement on her own behalf and on behalf of 10 members of the RFEF technical staff, distancing themselves from the words of Luis Rubiales during the Assembly last Friday and strongly supporting Jenni Hermoso after she felt ‘a victim of sexual assault’.
Eleven Members of the Spanish Women’s National Team Technical Staff Resign Following Luis Rubiales’ Non-Resignation. Jorge Vilda is not on this list, which includes the following individuals:
The eleven individuals who have signed a statement made public on X (formerly Twitter), Montse Tomé (assistant to Vilda), Javier Lerga (assistant coach), Eugenio Gonzalo (also U-17 and U-16 coach), Blanca Romero (fitness coach), Carlos Sánchez (goalkeeper coach), Rubén Jiménez (technical analyst), Sonia Bermúdez (U-19 and U-20 coach), Javier Velázquez (fitness coach), Javier Egido (technical analyst), Ander Ruiz (goalkeeper coach), and Elena Fernández (goalkeeper coach), express ‘their strongest and most resolute condemnation of the behavior shown by the president of the Spanish Football Federation,’ Luis Rubiales, towards Jenni Hermoso, whose version of events they support, contrary to that provided by the leader.
In the statement, Sonia Bermudez and the rest of the signatories (all technical members of the RFEF) express their resolute condemnation of Luis Rubiales’ behavior in the World Cup final, when he kissed Jenni Hermoso on the mouth without consent. Additionally, they show their support for the Madrid-born player, who stated in a release last Friday that she felt ‘vulnerable and a victim of aggression’.
Bermúdez also asserts that several female members of the staff were forced to sit in the front row of the Assembly, ‘trying to convey to society and the players that we shared the views of the president of the RFEF.’
The signatories have offered their positions and expressed their support for the FUTPRO statement signed by the 23 world champions and 58 other current and former women footballers.
