The Indian cricket board’s selection committee has given priority to experienced players in the team. However, there are three shortcomings in India’s team, which could pose challenges during the World Cup. In India’s World Cup squad of 15 members, there isn’t a single left-handed batsman among the top 4. Similarly, there is a deficiency in the bowling department.
India has announced a 15-member World Cup team, and there is not a single left-handed batsman in the top 4. Ishan Kishan, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel have found a place in the team. However, all three of them play in the middle order and lower order. Ishan Kishan might get a chance to open as he has experience in that position, but the chances are slim with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill in the team. Ishan could potentially bat at number 5. If Rahul gets a place in the playing eleven instead of Ishan, there won’t be a single left-handed batsman in the top 6.
Team India has two all-rounders and three spinners in the squad. Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel are all-rounders, while Kuldeep Yadav is a spin bowler. All three are left-arm spinners. Consequently, India doesn’t have an off-spinner in the squad. Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar are off-spinners, and one of them could have been given an opportunity. If we look at the 2011 World Cup team, there were two off-spinners in the form of Harbhajan Singh and Ashwin.
India might face a shortage of left-arm pacers during the 2023 World Cup. The team has given opportunities to fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Shardul Thakur. Hardik Pandya is an all-rounder. India lacks a left-arm pacer, which could be a disadvantage during the tournament.
